Common Issues With An Automatic Gearbox And Transition

Writer's picture: The Gearbox SpecialistsThe Gearbox Specialists

Automatic gearboxes are useful transmission devices for those who operate automatic vehicles, allowing individuals to control automobiles without the hassle of multiple gears. Despite the perceived simplicity of these gearbox functions, there are still an array of common issues encountered by those driving automatic cars, and we will aim to get to the very bottom of them within this helpful blog post. Let Gearbox Specialists take you through everything from the potential ramifications of a regularly stalling engine, to the immediate steps you should take if gear shifts are increasingly difficult.

Hesitation Changing Gears

Hesitation changing gears can be an absolute nightmare if you drive an automatic vehicle, and this transmission-related issue could arise for a number of reasons. Modern automatic transmissions are controlled by the vehicle's engine control unit (ECU), and this advanced device is supposed to use information such as the engine speed and throttle position to determine when to shift gears. Though usually fully-functional, if the ECU suffers damage or encounters a glitch, you may experience trouble with your vehicle shifting gears at inappropriate times. Another problem which causes such interference could be to do with the transmission fluid, though we’ll cover this later in more detail.

A Stalling Engine

As you probably know, the engine within an automatic vehicle should not be stalling on a regular basis, and if it is, this is more than likely linked to the gearbox of the car. Automatic vehicles use a torque converter to manage transmission fluid and keep the engine running while at a stop, though if the torque converter fails, the engine can stall out completely - certainly alarming the first time it happens. Best diagnosed by a specialist, torque converters can fail for many reasons, including dirty fluid, overheating and problems with stall speed. Allow Gearbox Specialists to take a look under the bonnet for peace of mind.

Leaking Fluid

Leaking fluid from your vehicle is likely immediately concerning, although if the transmission fluid only leaks when the vehicle is parked - it's perhaps a sign of overheating. The transmission includes several seals to keep fluid from leaking, and many of them can fail with repeated use over time, and especially in hot weather. When the fluid overheats, it may require extra sealing to keep the fluid from leaking, or perhaps even replacements. Rest assured that we supply and fit only the highest quality parts and components - including LUK and Sachs - to make sure that your gearbox and transmission have increased longevity.

A fully functioning automatic gearbox is essential in keeping your vehicle running safely - ensuring it is performing at its very best. At Gearbox Specialists, we carry out gearbox servicing to assist you with assorted issues, and are happy to answer any queries you may have with regards to your gearbox or clutch.
