Car ownership can come with lots of unexpected costs, where it is important to make sure you’re prepared for these to avoid financial difficulty if they do arise. Whether it's rising fuel costs, MOT fees or the expense of unexpected repairs, it’s always wise to prepare for a rainy day when it comes to looking after your motor.

One way in which you can protect yourself from unexpected costs is to ensure that you have a thorough vehicle warranty in place. This can help you to pay for a range of repairs and reduce the price of getting your car back on the road.

Read on to learn more about vehicle warranties, with a look at the different types available as well as potential exceptions.

What Is A Car Warranty?

A car warranty is a form of insurance for your vehicle which covers potential repair and labour costs if there is a mechanical or electrical fault with your vehicle. This kind of cover lasts for an agreed upon period of time, typically around three years, and can include various caveats and exclusions. Most policies will usually cover repairs or replacements for the vehicle’s engine, clutch, gearbox, suspension, brakes and steering.

New & Used Cars

All new cars typically come with a warranty which could last up to seven years, where these tend to cover most issues other than those caused by general wear and tear. This warranty is often dependent on various terms, such as making sure your vehicle is serviced on time. For a second-hand car, you can purchase a used car warranty, either from a dealership or online. Sometimes a used car will have some years left on its original warranty, meaning you will still have coverage for that length of time.

Invalidating A Car Warranty

It is important to make sure that you don’t invalidate your warranty during the period that it covers. Your payment claim may be declined for several reasons, where these include:

●    Ignoring a warning light for an extended period

●    Fitting non-standard parts to your vehicle

●    Driving a vehicle with a notable fault

●    Putting the wrong fuel into your vehicle

Can I ask a question I have taken my car to my main dealer as it has just had its entire engine replaced. I purchased an extended warranty as it is or was four years old at the time. So the engine was replaced under warranty but as soon as I got it back it’s been making a horrible sound so I’ve taken it back. I’ve been told they think they know the fault but have to take the gearbox out to get to it. I’ve been told the warranty won’t cover that so I have to pay £1200 to get it fixed. Any advice.
