As winter approaches, you’ll need to take proactive measures to protect your vehicle from unnecessary wear and tear. Cold temperatures, icy roads, and harsh conditions can all take a toll on your car if not properly maintained. In this blog, we will provide you with valuable tips to help you avoid winter-related car damage.

Prepare your car for winter

Before the winter season begins, it's important to prepare your car for the challenges ahead. Start by checking your car's battery, tyres, and fluid levels. Cold weather can drain the battery faster, so ensure it is in good condition. You should also consider installing winter tyres or using tyre chains for added traction. Don’t forget to check and top up all essential fluids, including antifreeze, oil, and windshield washer fluid.

Protect your clutch

The clutch is an important component of manual transmission vehicles and can be susceptible to wear and tear during winter. To protect your clutch, avoid "riding" it by keeping your foot on the pedal when not shifting gears. This constant contact can cause unnecessary wear and increase the chances of clutch failure. Instead, practise smooth and deliberate shifting, allowing the clutch to engage fully before releasing it.

Warm up your car properly

During cold winter mornings, it's tempting to start your car and immediately drive off. However, this can be highly damaging to your engine. Allow your car to warm up for a few minutes before driving, especially if it has been parked in extremely cold temperatures. This will ensure that the engine oil has had time to circulate and lubricate all necessary parts, reducing wear and tear.

Maintain proper tyre pressure

Cold weather can cause a drop in tyre pressure, which can affect your vehicle's handling and fuel efficiency. Regularly check your tyre pressure and ensure it is at the recommended level. Underinflated tyres can result in excessive wear, reduced traction, and increased fuel consumption. Properly inflated tyres, on the other hand, will provide better grip on icy roads and help minimise wear on the treads.

Keep your car clean

During winter, road salt, slush, and grime can accumulate on your car's exterior, leading to rust and corrosion. Make sure you regularly wash your car, paying attention to the undercarriage and wheel wells, where salt tends to accumulate. Applying a protective wax or sealant can provide an extra layer of defence against the elements, helping to preserve your car's paintwork and prevent rust formation.

Use quality windshield washer fluid

Visibility is crucial when driving in winter conditions. There are several things you can do to enhance this:

●     Ensure that your windshield washer fluid is suitable for freezing temperatures and effectively removes ice and snow.

●     Use a high-quality winter formula that will prevent the fluid from freezing and allow clear visibility while driving.

●     Regularly check and refill the fluid reservoir to avoid running out at critical moments.
